Why Are Exhaust Fumes Dangerous?

Exhaust fumes are dangerous to breathe in, because they contain a number of toxic chemicals and heavy metals. These fumes are created by burning gasoline in your car engine. And unfortunately, these chemicals and heavy metals can be found in the air around you if you live near a heavily congested city or busy highway. When you inhale these fumes, they can cause health problems such as asthma and other lung diseases.

What do Scientists Say about the Human Health Risks of Inhaling Car Exhaust?

With the increasing number of cars on the road and more people driving, emissions from automobiles are a growing concern. In fact, according to the World Health Organization, toxic air pollution is one of the leading causes of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It damages brain cells, lungs and other tissues in ways that can cause cancer to develop or make an existing cancer grow stronger.

The Growth of Electric Cars

It’s no secret that air pollution is a growing problem for not only the environment, but for human health as well. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that the U.S. produces about 60% of all global soot emissions and more than 70% of nitrogen oxides. So what can we do to combat this? Vehicle electrification is one solution, with electric vehicles producing zero tailpipe emissions and a drop in the amount of emissions released into the atmosphere. The EPA estimates that electric vehicles will reduce U.S. soot emissions by up to 60% in 2025 and 90% in 2050 by replacing older, less fuel-efficient models of cars with battery-powered alternatives.

To conclude, while car exhaust emissions are a problem in the modern world, they are not a problem that cannot be solved. Although modern cars produce much cleaner emissions in comparison to cars 10+ years ago, the global push to towards electric is something we’re not quite ready for yet with infrastructure being one of them.

However, the push for electric cars has made a small, positive impact in the short term, however other avenues are yet to be widely explored such as hydrogen powered vehicles. Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
