If you’re experiencing issues with your Vauxhall/Opel Astra’s engine overheating or erratic temperature readings, it’s likely that the coolant temperature sensor is malfunctioning. Fortunately, replacing the sensor is a relatively simple task that can be done with a few basic tools and some patience. In this article, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of replacing the coolant temperature sensor on your Vauxhall/Opel Astra, so you can get your car running smoothly again. Whether you’re an experienced mechanic or a novice DIYer, this guide will help you tackle the task with confidence.
Tools Needed:
- An old cloth to catch any coolant
- Flat head screw driver
- Coolant
Step 1: Locate the coolant temperature sensor on the right-hand side of the engine (circled in red)

Step 2: Using a flat head screw driver, lever the metal clip upwards while supporting it with your other hand as it can spring off unexpectedly. Then, place your old cloth below the sensor to catch any coolant (optional) and pull the sensor from its location.

Step 3: Press the button on the plug to release the old sensor. Below is the OEM part number (55353807)

Step 4: The replacement is a part called an ERA coolant temperature sensor. It’s currently available on Amazon.

Step 5: With your new part, simply do the reverse. Slide in and hold your new temperature sensor into its location, then simply push your metal clip down on top to hold it in place and you’re done!
