Whether you’re approaching the recommended interval, seeking to improve your Mini Cooper 2001 R50’s performance, or resolving a misfire issue, replacing spark plugs and/or ignition leads is vital for igniting the fuel-air mixture in your vehicle’s combustion chamber. To easily swap out the spark plugs in your Mini Cooper 2001 R50, simply follow these clear-cut below.
Tools needed:
- Torque wrench/ratchet with extension bar
- 16mm spark plug socket
Step 1: Grab the coil from the base and gently wiggle upwards until it pops out. It’s important that you DO NOT pull from the lead/wire as this could stretch it.

Step 2: With your 16mm spark plug socket, attach it to your extension bar and remove all 4 spark plugs.

Step 3: Then with your new set of NGK spark plugs, which come highly recommended for the R50 mini, hand tighten them back in and then torque each one down to 27 Nm / 20 lb ft.

Step 4: Install your brand new NGK ignition leads by gently pushing them on (You should hear a small pop sound to let you know that they’re seated).
