If you own a non-turbo Volvo S60/V70 from the 2001-2007 model range and find yourself approaching the recommended interval, seeking to improve your vehicle’s performance, or troubleshooting a misfire issue, then it’s time to consider replacing the coil packs and spark plugs.

In this guide, we will provide you with a straightforward and user-friendly 5 step process to easily do this at home yourself.

Tools needed:

  • T30 Torx
  • 10mm sockets
  • 16mm spark plug socket with an extension bar

Step1: Remove the x8 T30 torx bolts from the timing belt and spark plug cover.

Step 3: If you’re replacing all of your coils, disconnect the connector on each one and gently pull them out. Or if you’re not changing the coils and wish to save time, take them out in one.

Step 4: With a 16mm spark plug socket attached to an extension bar, remove all 5 spark plugs. (Note: If your spark plug socket is missing its rubber insert, you can use your magnetic pick-up tool to remove your spark plug)

Step 5: Do everything in reverse ensuring that you thread each coil in by hand first to avoid cross threading them. Then torque each spark plug down to around 30nm (22lbft).

Note: If you don’t have a torque wrench, then finger tighten the plug with your ratchet till you feel strong resistance, then give it a final quarter turn.
