If you own a Porsche Boxster 986 and have been noticing a decrease in performance, experiencing misfires, or if you’re approaching the recommended interval for spark plug and coil pack replacement, it’s crucial to consider replacing them. To save time and money, our comprehensive 5-step guide will empower you to carry out this task conveniently at home.
Tools needed:
- Socket wrench with a 10mm socket
- 5mm hex bit
- Socket wrench with a 16mm deep socket
- Magnetic tool (optional, for accessing spark plugs)
- Torque wrench
Step 1: Open the boot, pull back the carpet and slide out the relay box (usually located on the left-hand side). Pull out the ignition relay labelled circled in red below.

Step 2: Raise the backend of the car and remove both rear wheels.

Step 3: Remove the X2 10mm nuts securing the plastic cowling on both sides to reveal the 3 ignitions coils.

Step 4: Disconnect the coil switches. Then, with a 5mm hex bit, unscrew the 2 bolts that hold down each coil pack and pull them out.

Step 5: Using a 16mm deep socket, remove each spark plug. Note, it may come in handy to have a magnetic tool if you struggle to get access to the spark plug.

Step 6: Then, do everything in reverse with your new spark plugs and ignition coils. Remember to hand-tighten your spark plugs first before you torque all 6 down to 30nm (22 ft-lbs).
