The BMW E60 M5 V10 is a high-performance car with a complex engine. As such, it is important to maintain it properly, including replacing the spark plugs on a regular basis. Spark plugs play a vital role in the combustion process, and old or worn spark plugs can cause a variety of problems, such as misfires, reduced performance, and increased fuel consumption.
Replacing the spark plugs on an E60 M5 V10 is a relatively straightforward process, but it is important to follow the correct steps to avoid damaging the engine. In this guide, we will walk you through the process step-by-step.
Tools needed:
- New spark plugs (NGK LKR8AP)
- 16mm Spark plug socket
- Ratchet
- Torque wrench
- Magnetic rod
- T30 Torx
Step 1: Starting on the passenger side, loosen the hose clamps with a flat head screw driver. Then undo the x4 clips that hold down the airbox, the hose on the back and mass airflow sensor (MAF) on the intake pipe. This will allow you to remove the airbox and give you better access to the spark plugs.

Step 2: Remove the power steering reservoir which is held in by x2 10mm bolts.

Step 3: Remove the lower airbox with a T30 so you have access to gently pry off the cover with a flat head screw driver – revealing the 5 coil packs.

Step 4: On the tops of each coil pack simply pull up the clip and unplug it. Then you can either pull out each coil by hand or use your flat head screwdriver to pull each one out by slotting it through the clip and pulling up.

Step 5: Now, with your 16mm spark plug socket loosen each spark plug and remove them using your magnetic rod tool. Then simply replace each spark plug with your new NGK plugs, remembering to hand tighten them in first to avoid cross-threading them.

Step 6: Repeat this process on the drivers side, remembering to remove the remaining lower airbox with a T30. This will make space for you to put your coolant reservoir, which is held in with a 10mm bolt, to get easier access to your spark plugs.
