In this guide, we will walk you through the process of replacing the front brake pads on your Volvo XC90 model from 2002 to 2014.
Tools needed:
- X2 flat head screw drivers
- 7mm allen head
- 10mm socket
- 18mm socket
- Breaker bar
- Brake cleaner
- Copper grease
- Silicone grease
- Red thread locker
Step 1: Slide the caliper piston back using a pry bar to make installation of your new pads easier.

Step 2: Remove the plastic slider cap and undo the slider pin using your 7mm allen head.

Step 3: Using x2 flat head screwdrivers, use one to pry up the middle of the clip (as this part has a tab that slots into the caliper) and the other to pry at the top or bottom of the clip so it pops out.

Step 4: Pop out the old brake calipers by hand and support the caliper on the spring to avoid letting the caliper hang on the brake hose and potentially damaging it.

If you’re not replacing your discs/rotors at the point, please skip to step 9
Step 5: With an 18mm socket on a breaker bar, remove the x2 bolts holding in the caliper bracket.

Step 6: Remove the 10mm bolt holding in the disc/rotor.

Step 7: Clean the wheel hub and put a light coating of copper grease on the surface to prevent it from seizing in the future.

Step 8: Place your new disc onto the hub and snug up your 10mm bolt to hold the disc/rotor in place. Remember: ALL brand new brake discs come with a protective layer of grease which will need to be cleaned with brake cleaner before installation.

Step 9: Wire brush the inside of your caliper (along with some brake cleaner) and apply some silicone lube onto the caliper piston and slider pins.

Step 10: Push and twist your slider pins back in, ensuring they’re flush with the inside of the caliper.

Step 11: Clip your new brake pads into the correct place (image above)

Step 12: Add a touch of red thread locker to the bolts that hold the caliper bracket in place and torque them down to 26ftlbs and then tighten a further 60°.

Note: Please ensure the bolt threads are clean before applying a small amount of red thread locker.
Step 13: Finally, you can put the caliper back onto the disc/rotor and snug down the x2 7mm bolts – not forgetting to reinstall the caliper clip to finish your service.
