Replacing spark plugs and ignition coils on a VW Golf MK4 V5 is pretty straight forward process. And with the correct tools, it can be carried out by any DIY’er, at home.

Tools Needed:

  • Hook tool
  • 16mm spark plug socket
  • Ratchet with extension bar
  • Ignition coil puller (optional)
  • Torque wrench

Step 1: Start by removing the electrical connectors from each ignition coil. Gently pull the tab on the connector with your hook tool while gently pulling with your hand at the same time.

Step 2: Using your hand, or an ignition coil puller, pull out all 5 coils. Remember to place them down in order so they go back in the same place when you reinstall them.

Step 3: Grab your ratchet and attach your extension bar with your 16mm socket and remove each spark plug

Step 4: With your new spark plug, gently lower each one down and tighten them by hand first (without the ratchet) to ensure they screw down smoothly and avoid cross-threading. Then torque it down to 25nm and then do everything else in reverse order.
